Course Description: This course offers intensive insight into industrial pump troubleshooting and repair. The student will, through hands-on labs and exercises, learn about pump maintenance, alignment and disassembly as well as predictive and preventative maintenance.
Objectives: At the conclusion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Troubleshoot failed pumps and identify methods to prevent future failures
  • Demonstrate an understanding of predictive and preventative failures
  • Identify and select the proper type of packing or mechanical seals best suited for a particular application
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the lubrication needs of pump bearings
  • Be able to set up a pump for maximum efficiency
  • Demonstrate an understanding of impeller relationship to pump head pressure
  • Be able to align a pump and correct pump misalignment

  • Positive displacement pumps
  • Non-Positive displacement pumps
  • Gear pump basics – pressure and suction, pressure regulation, sizing (HP & GPM), disassembly
  • Lobe pumps – pressure and suction, pressure regulation, sizing (HP & GPM), disassembly
  • Piston pumps – reciprocating pump basics and operation, single and multiple stage pistons, disassembly
  • Vane pumps – uses, operation, troubleshooting
  • Diaphragm pumps – uses, operation, troubleshooting
  • Screw pumps – uses, operation, troubleshooting
  • Centrifugal pumps – laws of operation, head pressure, sizing, troubleshooting, disassembly, types, repair
  • Pump alignment – effects of misalignment, causes of misalignment, correcting misalignment
