Prerequisites: Students who take this course should be comfortable working in a windows-based environment, and working with PLC ladder logic.
Software Used: RSLogix or AI software with your choice of PLC-5, SLC-500, or ControlLogix systems
Course Description: In this age of information, data needs to be shared between PLC equipment. This communication can take place over a variety of different networks such as Devicenet, Controlnet, Ethernet, or Data Highway Plus. In this course, we will look at the communication methods your plant is using to show the students how PLCs interact with each other using your own plant programs as an example. This knowledge is very useful when an interruption of data flow occurs causing downtime, or when additional data needs to be transferred between pieces of equipment.

    Ethernet

  • The history and purpose of Ethernet
  • Ethernet Addressing
  • Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)
  • Configure a PC to communicate on Ethernet
  • Operation of the Domain Name System (DNS)
  • Configure a PLC to communicate on Ethernet
  • Set up the Ethernet Driver in RSLinx
  • Schedule a connection between two PLC’s on Ethernet
  • Utilize data received from another PLC in logic

    ControlNet

  • The history and purpose of ControlNet
  • ControlNet addressing and cable system
  • Configuring Node addresses
  • Set up a driver in RSLinx for the PC to communicate on ControlNet
  • Schedule a connection between PLC processors using RSNetworx
  • Utilize data received from another PLC in logic

    DH+

  • The history and purpose of DH+
  • DH+ Cabling limitations and termination
  • Configuring Node addresses
  • Set up a driver in RSLinx for the PC to communicate on DH+
  • Utilize the MSG instruction to pass data to other PLC processors
  • Use data received from another PLC in logic
